John Chalcraft
John Chalcraft is a professor of Middle East history and politics at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He works on history and politics from below, transnationalism, and popular mobilization in Gramscian perspective. His most recent book is Popular Politics in the Making of the Modern Middle East (2016).
John met Michael when he became his PhD supervisor at Oxford in 1994-5 and followed him to NYU in 1995 for the rest of the PhD. He says he has been fumbling about in the face of Michael’s sophistication and insight ever since.
