Zachary Lockman

Zachary Lockman teaches modern Middle Eastern history at New York University. His research has been on the socioeconomic, cultural and political history of the modern Middle East, particularly Egypt and Palestine, and on the field of Middle East studies itself. Among his books are Workers on the Nile: Nationalism, Communism, Islam, and the Egyptian Working Class, 1882-1954, (1987, with Joel Beinin); Comrades and Enemies: Arab and Jewish Workers in Palestine, 1906-1948 (1996); Contending Visions of the Middle East: The History and Politics of Orientalism (2004/2010); and Field Notes: The Making of Middle East Studies in the United States (2016).

He has worked closely with Michael since 1995, when the two of them arrived at NYU, to rebuild what is now called the Department of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies.
